Our Commitment to Serve During Coronavirus

February 01, 1929 - January 31, 2021

William E. Stenglein, Age 91 of Harvey, Michigan passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 31, 2021.

The oldest of 3 boys, he was born on February 1st, 1929 to Earl and Emma Stenglein on the Stenglein Family Farm. Bill's childhood was spent working together with his parents and brothers, Fred and Karl, to run the family farm in Chocolay Township. He attended and graduated from Bishop Baraga Catholic High School in 1947. At the age of 18, Bill worked at Cliffs Dow Chemical Company. He served in the US Army in the aftermath of World War 2, stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged after serving his country.

On September 25th, 1954, Bill married Sharon Alderton from Ishpeming. Together, they raised three sons: Russell, Peter, and Daniel. He has worn many different hats over the years: soldier, miner, Union Carpenter, logger, laborer, farmer, and family man. Bill commuted the U.P. building many notable structures: Verso Paper Mill, Presque Isle Power Plant, and Superior Dome to list a few. Bill worked for a number of years at the Tracy Mine, afterwards he enjoyed attending the Tracy Mine Reunions annually to reconnect with coworkers. As impressive as Bill's working careers were- Bill was also simultaneously maintaining the family homestead, The Stenglein Farm.

In his spare time, he enjoyed reading the newspaper, fishing, hunting, watching sports, and daily meals with his family. Bill prided himself on working to provide for his family and did so in such a way as to remind us of the integrity wrought from tougher times. They say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, and a preacher. But every day, three times a day, you need a farmer. Add to that, the resources mined, protection provided, and buildings still in use to this day...Bill was truly the Salt of the Earth and Light of the World.
Survivors include his sons, Peter Stenglein of Harvey, MI and Russell Stenglein of Kodiak, AK, three grandchildren, Heather Olson of Kingsford, MI, Peter (Angie) Stenglein of Skandia, MI and Katey Stenglein of Marquette, MI, four great grandchildren, Henrik, Charlie, Adelyn, and Everleigh, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his wife Sharon, his son Daniel, and his brothers, Karl and Fred.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 from 11 am to 12 Noon at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A graveside service will follow at Northland Chapel Gardens Cemetery.
