Such a shock to just learn of Dr. Kirkham's passing. My husband is an Iraq War Veteran with PTSD. Dr. Kirkham was instrumental in advocating on his behalf for the testing that was necessary to determine further diagnosis' of his disability. Her kindness and compassion to my husband and I will never be forgotten. We felt relief after meeting with her and we commented that we would be friends with her if she were our neighbor. For Dr. Kirkhams spouse and family please know that she made in a difference in our lives as I know she did for many others. Her compassion, sense of humor, her attentiveness in validating the struggles of our nations military wounded meant the world to us. Our thoughts and love to all of you.....

Betty Bourquein July 6, 2020

We met J.R., Julianne, and Alyssa while J.R. and my husband were patients at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and we were all staying at Hope Lodge. We were assigned the same kitchen, our rooms were close together and J.R.'s locker was next to ours. We became instant friends and tried to support each other throughout the treatments. When J.R. and Julianne left Hope Lodge, they shared their extra food stuffs with us. We were able to meet up with them again on a subsequent visit to Mayo.

It saddens us to think that Julianne is gone. Our thoughts and prayers go with the family.

I met Julie through my work at the hospital and with the MSU UP Campus medical students. She was always so kind and helpful and good to the students and to me. Her sweet smile could put anyone at ease and she had a wonderful way of communicating with people. She was a very special person and left the world a better place than she found it. My prayers and thoughts are with her family. You will be missed Julie-you made such a great difference for so many.

Judy Shazer July 6, 2020

I am saddened to hear of Julie's passing. She was the first student to do a pre-doctoral psychology placement at the Forensic Center in Saline in 1987. I participated in her training. She was a very intellectually curious, sensitive, and hard working doctoral student. She had a great sense of humor and the staff enjoyed working with her. I stayed in touch with her for a while and we became friends. It has been many years now since I last had contact with her. I actually tried to look her up last year when I took my daughter to NMU. I am especially sorry now that we did not connect. She was a wonderful psychologist. My condolences to her family and friends.

Kerrie Rogers July 5, 2020

I was a patient of Dr. Kirkham's for a short while and I remember that I always looked forward to seeing her because she was always so kind and she introduced me to a wonderful and inspiring friend of mine. I was so sad to hear of Dr. Kirkham's passing, she was so kindhearted and truly cared for her patients. My heart goes out to her family and friends. She truly lives on in our memories and minds, as well as our hearts.

Karlyn Rapport July 5, 2020

Karlyn Rapport: I am so sorry to hear of Julie Kirkham's passing. I worked with Dr Kirkham on the rehab team. She had a gentle and respectful way of providing an honest assessment of a patient's status . The patients, their families and other rehabilitation team members valued her and her expertise.

Shauna Tindall July 5, 2020

My sincere condolences to Julie's family. I knew Julie when we were both in grad school at Wayne State. We had a carpool group for students who lived in Ann Arbor. It was a great experience. We laughed a lot, compared notes about clinical issues and provided support for each other. Julie was a wonderful and caring clinician, and a warm, compassionate person. She will be sorely missed.

Joel Mirman July 5, 2020

I've known Julie since the mid-70s. She, her mother and I had a special bond. Jean decided that she would be my Surrogate Jewish Mother, and when Julie moved to the Upper Peninsula, she became Nanook of the North. I am so saddened by her death. The world will not be the same without her kindness and goodness. I'll be reaching for the phone to call her and tell her something important in my life or ask her advice for a long time to come. She will be so missed. My deepest sympathy to Alyssa, J.R., Paul, Alan and Don and the rest of her family. Joel Mirman

Mark Lumley (Director of Wayne State University Cl July 5, 2020

Julie graduated with her PhD from our Clinical Psychology program at Wayne State University, and we are very proud of the great work that she has done as a psychologist at Marquette General and for her community over the last 30 years. Her classmate and lifelong friend, Dr. Cathy Jordan, shared this sad news with us. Our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Makayla Mayo July 3, 2020

Dr. Kirkham was such an amazing lady. She helped me get back to a "normal" life after I suffered from a brain aneurysm and stroke at the age of 18. She was always there to listen and give her wise advise. She will forever be in my heart.

Pam & Jim Krausman July 2, 2020

We have known Julie and JR since moving here 20 yrs ago. We knew them personally through woodcarving and outside of her profession. But we do know that she was a very committed wise doctor who loved her patients dearly. She was committed to her life's partner JR Scott. and their 4 legged critters. We enjoyed many good times with them and send our deepest sympathies to JR and her family. Stay strong JR. Many will miss you Julie. Pam & Jim Krausman

Many doctors are responsible for saving my life physically. For that, I am very grateful. However, Dr. Kirkham saved me emotionally and spiritually. I can’t put into words my deep love, appreciation, and admiration for the doctor and woman who treated me with such knowledgeable compassion. My deepest condolences to her family. Lori A. Whealy

Anne Loman July 2, 2020

I am so sorry and saddened, she was an amazing woman and so kind to always ask how my son was she had treated years ago. I always enjoyed talking with Dr. Kirkham

Sending our heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Kirkham. Hearing of her passing left us feeling incredibly sad. We will always be grateful for the guidance she provided our family as she helped our son navigate his TBI journey. She had a way of conveying her deep understanding and knowledge of our circumstances, in the most gentle, compassionate and comforting way. We will always be grateful for her professionalism and especially her kindness —she will be deeply missed.

Tina Mayo July 1, 2020

So heartbroken hearing this news. I can’t even explain the impact she has had on our lives. She is the one who was able to help my daughter be able to go out on her own after a brain injury at the age of 18. She literally gave her the gift of life again and became a part of our family. She truly cared and made sure all of her patients (and families) were taken care of. She will be soooooo missed and she was loved by so many. I’m so sorry for your loss. Our lives were completely blessed because of her and we are so thankful for the difference she made. Her memory will live on in the lives of so many people.

I've known Julie since I was a little girl. She was my good friend's mother AND next door neighbor! I spent as much time at her house as I did mine. Julie, you will be sorely missed, and we just got back in contact, after all these years, but missed our opportunity. I pray that you are in peace and I'm so sad, but I'm sure you would offer sound advice about passing to the 'other side', as well. Julie was like my second mother, always providing wisdom, caring, laughter, and homemade Buckeyes:). Thanks for taking care of me like I was your own. I wish you beauty and love and heaven itself. You will always be a treasure, and your absence from planet earth, doesn't mean, to me, that you're gone. Sending love to you and your family. xxoo

Grateful Patient July 1, 2020

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Kirkham’s family, friends and colleagues. Dr. Kirkham was true shining star and champion for her patients. I am so grateful to her for her knowledgeable and compassionate care. The systemic injustice (medical, workplace, insurance, legal) and physical and mental pain that I faced after sustaining a TBI felt insurmountable and I felt like I was in a hole that I would never get out of. The day I saw Dr. Kirkham all of that changed. Within five minutes she knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix it. I did exactly what she told me to do and I was able climb out of that hole and work towards a life that is even better than the one I had before my accident.

J R and Kirkham family,. So sorry to hear of Julianne's passing. We met as our professions intersected and I came to appreciate and trust her conclusions and diagnoses. We became friends and talked about many things, including fishing. She was quite the angler. I will miss her greatly.

Tracy Tomlinson June 30, 2020

I met Julie through her daughter, my friend, Alyssa. I'm seeing that Julie made important differences in people's lives through her work, but she also made the phenomenal contribution to the world of raising an amazing daughter. Thank you, Julie, for making an important difference in my life.

Chris VandeZande June 30, 2020

My prayers and thoughts go out to Julianne’s family. My office was right across the hall from hers for many years. We were on the same treatment team for a few years too. She was a lovely woman and shared her home with me a few times, watching her wolfhounds with my Great Danes and we “crafted” together. When I left MGH, I would still go back and visit her, she was always genuinely interested in getting updates on my life. Her patients adored her and so did I. This is heartbreaking but hoping she is making God some wonderful quilts.

Dr. Kirkham is the reason I am still here.
She is also the reason that my wife and 2 daughters stayed with me after my TBI . Nobody could possibly know how much she helped me after my TBI .
She was the only person that I could open up ant talk to. She made me feel like more of a very close friend than a patient. She has helped me for the last 14 years. And will be missed tremendously.

Shaunna Rochefort June 30, 2020

Dr Kirkham was a very kind and loveable person. She has helped me through the many struggles I have had. Always giving me hope and understanding. I will miss her greatly. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Beth Stanchina June 30, 2020

My sincere sympathy to Dr. Julie Kirkham’s Family. Please know you are all in my prayers for peace and treasure the good memories to help get through this difficult time.
I met Julie at MGH and we became friends quickly. Julie is the most kind hearted loving person I knew! We shared a love for her dogs and I loved watching her dogs when she traveled. In the last few years we didn’t spend much time together but when we bumped into one another, we always greeted each other with a long hug. Picking up where we left off as caring friends❤️

Julie Rajala June 30, 2020

I worked on and off with Dr. Kirkham for many, many years and our sadness for her loss professionally is profound. Personally her help with a family member of mine truly changed our lives. I will always be grateful to her for helping me make the right decisions (and actually offering to fight the school systems) to get my child what he needed for his education after a brain injury changed his way of learning. She truly changed our lives and I will miss her.

Dr. Kirkham was so kind and caring. I knew her briefly yet I felt I had known her for years. She reached out to me when she saw me in pain and greeted us every day with a smile. Our last conversation was her excitement over her upcoming haircut....finally. We laughed on Friday as we left work. My last chat with her. My sincerel condolences to her family and friends.
