Obituary for ALBERT LLOYD TRUDGEON

Albert Lloyd Trudgeon passed away on March 31, 2018, at the age of 94.

He was born on March 22, 1924, to Elizabeth Alma (Hosking) and Edwin Trudgeon in Hancock, MI. Both parents were first generation immigrants from the Cornwall region of England. His parents and four siblings, Florence, Elsie, Grace and Tom preceded Al in death. Although he was the youngest, Al was the last, and lived to be the oldest of his immediate family.

Al graduated from Hancock High School in the spring of 1942. On February 12, 1943 he married his wife, Cecerina (Lena) Roncaglione. She preceded him in death a few months short of their sixtieth wedding anniversary in the fall of 2002.

In the spring of 1943 Al took his place among the legions of the “Greatest Generation” by joining the United States Navy. Serving in the Pacific theater, he was a member of a three person radio team. Al, a radioman by rank, landed on the beaches in five amphibious operations including; Guam, Saipan, Leyte, Lingayan and Iwo Jima. Although he seldom spoke of his war time experience, his mettle was truly forged in the crucible of war. It must have been a living hell. With what seems certain irony, he referred to those landings straight faced, as “beach parties.”

Having survived the war, he returned to the Marquette area where he and Cecerina set about the rigorous demands of raising five children. With hard work, quiet determination and great patience they provided a solid family life, education for all and ultimately took unspoken pride, in the knowledge that their children were equipped with the life skills necessary to succeed.

Al began his post war working life true to his Cornish roots by going underground into the iron mines of the Marquette Range. When the subsurface mines exhausted, he became a deputy for the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and finished his working life under the employ of the Marquette Housing Commission. He was a “Jack of all trades” taking pride in building and remodeling homes and camps along the way. He also did all kinds of maintenance and various repairs. During their retirement years, Al and Cecerina enjoyed a seasonal home in Arizona as well as extensive travel in the U.S. and Europe. The trips they seemed to enjoy most were the visits to their children and grandchildren where they usually worked on one project or another.

Albert Lloyd Trudgeon is survived by his children, Barbara (Tom) Burns, Germaine (John) Curry, Gary (Linda) Trudgeon, Thomas (Marilyn) Trudgeon and Joseph (Arnelia Ettner) Trudgeon; grandchildren, Kay (Tom) Oliver, Tim (Michelle) Trudgeon, Mark (Stephanie) Burns, Emily (Mike) Ellison, Jonathan Trudgeon and Eric (Amy) Burns; great grandchildren, Josh Trudgeon, Dominic Trudgeon, Gary and Dorothy Ellison, Frederick and Henry Burns; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special neighbor and friend, Kathy Fitzpatrick. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Torri Rogers.

As Al walks on, he owes no debt to his children. Indeed they now shoulder the burden of indebtedness, owing to the unselfish care and tutelage provided by their parents. The generational torch is passed. Thank you for our success Dad!

The family recognizes the wonderful care our father received under the watchful eyes of the attentive and professional staff at Lakeview Assisted Living, Gladstone, MI, and during his final days, at UP Health System, Marquette, MI.

The Trudgeon family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the funeral service in the funeral home at 12 noon with Marilyn Trudgeon presiding. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please consider a donation to the Beacon House, 1301 N. Third Street, Marquette, MI 49855 in Al’s memory.
