Talivaldis L. Lapins, age 73, of Marquette, passed peacefully away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, due to stomach cancer. His wife was by his side and he was under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.

He was born April 29, 1944 in Riga, Latvia to Edgars and Enas Lapins. The family escaped from Latvia to Germany when the Russians invaded and were in a refugee camp before coming to America. He came to The United States in 1950 with his family and was indentured to a farm family in Nebraska. He had to repeat Kindergarten because he spoke little English.

The family then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1951, and he graduated from Central High School in 1963. He became a US Citizen in 1965. In 1968, he was drafted and spent time as a Sargent in the US Army in Korea for his new country. He graduated in 1971 from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts and continued to University of Detroit to finish his Masters of Arts in 1975.

He worked for the State of Michigan in the Dept. of Corrections for 30 years, lastly as Area Supervisor of Parole and Probation in Marquette.

Tal was an avid motorcycle rider and belonged to The H.O.G. Group, The Blue Knights, and The Heritage Chapter of Indian Riders.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carolyn (Cricket) Lapins of Marquette; five children, Erika Lapins Pilch of Portland, Oregon, Tal Lapins Jr. of Denver, CO, Abigail Uhrick of Charlevoix, MI, Amanda Uhrick Reinfeld of Charlestown, MA and John Uhrick of Royal Oak, MI; he is also survived by two sisters, Mertza Randall of Big Rapids, MI and Doris Pride of Minocqua, WI.

A Private celebration of Tal’s Life (A Party!) will be held by his family but has no date at this time.

No flowers or remembrance donations, please.

Mr. Tal Lapins would like all of his friends to go out and fondly remember him with a good dinner and a drink!
