Obituary for FRED J. BARRY

Fred J. Barry, 56, of Marquette, died peacefully, Monday, October 1, 2018 at his home.

He was born April 12, 1962 in Marquette, a son of Donald and Kathleen (Butler) Barry. He was a 1980 graduate of Marquette Senior High School where he was an excellent student and an outstanding athlete. Fred was graduated from MTU in 1983 and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

A lifelong area resident, Fred worked hard for many years in construction and always enjoyed the freedom of working outside and teaching his skills to others.

An avid Green Bay Packer and Detroit Redwings fan, he also enjoyed attending his youngest son’s hockey games through the years and spent many seasons bird hunting with his older son. Fred loved traveling with his wife and family and spending time with friends. Due to his kind and steady nature children and animals adored him. Fred was fun to be around, generous beyond measure and kind-hearted.

He is survived by his loving family, wife, Jacqueline (Watson) Barry, whom he married at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette on August 19, 1989; sons, Eric (Jennifer) Watson of Green Bay, WI and Mitchell Barry, currently a student at WMU. Fred’s sons were the light of his life and he was thrilled that he was about to be a Grandpa for the first time and his grandson, Benjamin Fred Watson, of Green Bay, WI came into the world just 3 days after Fred’s passing.

Fred is also survived by his parents, Donald & Kathleen Barry of Marquette; 7 siblings, Dr. Lynn (John Archambeault) Barry of Marquette, Ruth (Kak Koonala) Barry of Marquette, Mike (Sue) Barry of Grand Rapids, MI, Sue (Pete) Chinici of Haslet Township, NJ, Joe (Josie) Barry of Dorr, MI, Nancy (Charles) Sarver of Tijeras, NM and Patty (Jason) Lee of Alachua, FL; mother-in-law, RaeJean Watson of Marquette; sister’s-in-law, Jeanette (Hector) Flores of Tampa, FL and Lori (Jim) Steinberg of Steamboat Springs, CO; many nieces & nephews; and dog, Archie. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law Wilfred Watson and his beloved dog and best friend, Barney, whom we are certain is with Fred now.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 4pm to 6:30 pm at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Gregory Heikkila officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Fred’s memory to his son, Mitchell Barry, to assist with his ongoing college expenses.
