Obituary for CARLO WILLIAM MAKI

Carlo W. Maki, 91, of Marquette, passed away Monday evening, October 15, 2018 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for veterans where he was a resident for a few days.

Carlo was born on November 21, 1926 in Gay, Michigan, a son of the late Emil and Helma (Assumaa) Maki. He attended Ishpeming High School through his sophomore year before enlisting in U.S. Navy during World War II where he received his GED.

After discharge from the Navy, Carlo attended Michigan Tech University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He worked for two years at Kimberly Clark in Neehna, Wisconsin, then returning to Ishpeming where he was employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for over 45 years, retiring at the age of 70.

Carlo was a member of the Range Engineers, the Economic Club of Marquette County, and the Marquette Golf Club. He was an avid supporter of arts and culture in the U.P. and in his retirement, loved to travel. Always an early riser, Carlo rarely missed his coffee clutch buddies at Jeffrey’s Restaurant. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral.

Survivors include three children, David (Cody) Maki of Thornton, CO, Deborah (John) Veiht of Marquette and Michael (Kathy) Summers of New Smyrna Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Mareena Maki, Erik Maki, Michael (Sarah) Veiht, and Troy Summers; his partner, Mary Gail Velin of Marquette; sister-in-law, Concetta Maki of Ishpeming; two brothers-in-law, Wilhart Aho of Ishpeming and Wilho Ritola of Republic; extended family members, Cynthia (Michael) Makela of Marquette and Brian Marlowe of Negaunee; their grandchildren, Randy Makela, Jason (Lynn) Makela, Kaley (Mark) Niemi, Mitch (Amanda) Marlowe, Joe (Shirley) Juidici; their great grandchildren, Rayna Makela, Lily and Olivia Niemi, and Ray Juidici; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Carlo was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Phyllis M. Maki, second wife, Phyllis C. Maki; also siblings, Eino Maki, Lillian Aho, and Violet Ritola.

A memorial service will be held in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Monday, October 22nd at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. The Maki family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
