Obituary for WILLIAM D. KOSKI

William (Bill) D. Koski 77, of Gwinn, passed away at UP Health System Marquette where he had been a patient for the last week and had been battling a lengthy illness.

He was born on February 11, 1941 in Ishpeming, Michigan to John and Louise (Swanson) Koski. He was a lifelong resident of Gwinn. He attended Gwinn Schools and was a pivotal member of the Modeltowners basketball teams. He graduated from Gwinn in 1959 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force after serving four years in various posts around the world. He began working at the Empire Mine in 1965 and worked there until his retirement in 1998. He was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Judy (Mattila) whom he married September 28, 1968; and his children, Amy Koski of Marquette and Mary Koski of Ishpeming; sisters, Gloria LaFave of Gwinn and MaryLou (John) Hamm of Clearfield, KY; brothers, Robert and Paul (Betsy) Koski, both of Gwinn. He is also survived by nephews, Richard (Melinda) LaFave of Henderson, NV, Robert (Linda) Hamm of Clearfield, John Paul (Kim Lambert) Hamm of Clearfield and David Maki of Rock, MI; nieces, Louise (Mark) Ingalls of Gwinn, MaryBeth (Tom) Armstrong of Clearfield, Kris and Kim Koski of Oak Ridge, New Jersey, and Jill (Eric) Thompson of Rock; sister-in-law, Linda Maki; and by many great nephews and nieces and also many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack; father-in-law, George Mattila; brother’s-in-law, Richard (Chic) E. LaFave and Jim Maki. Also by his canine companion, Shadow.

Bill will be remembered as a friend to all and for his love of his family. He was greatly loved by his family. We will miss so many things about him including his great sense of humor and how he loved to sing.

The family would like to thank the 6th floor and Intermediate Care Unit nurses for their compassionate care of Bill during his stay at UP Health System-Marquette.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 3 to 5 pm at the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 5 pm with Rev. Andrew Plocher officiating. A luncheon will follow at Grace Lutheran Church. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to UPAWS be made in Bill’s name at PO Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855.
