Madeline Claire Hanson, 92, of Marquette, died peacefully, Saturday morning, March 17, 2018, at Mill Creek Assisted Living’s Memory Care, in the presence of her family and under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.

She was born September 5, 1925 in Marquette, a daughter of the late John J. and Zella (Constance) Smith. She was a 1943 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and was a lifelong area resident.

On October 16, 1947 she married Theodore W. “Ted” Hanson at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette and he preceded her in death on February 18, 2014.

Madeline had worked at Getz’s while in high school, then at Michigan Bell Telephone Co., before taking a job as a teller in 1970 at the Marquette Catholic Credit Union. She was employed there until her retirement in 1987.

She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and a proud resident of South Marquette. Her interests included gardening, going to camp, crossword puzzles, polka, the Green Bay Packers and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed hockey and followed the Sentinels, Iron Rangers and NMU Wildcats through the years.

Madeline also served as the primary caregiver to her mother and brother when it became necessary.

She is survived by her children, Greg (Susie) Hanson, Brian “Buck” Hanson, Michelle Winquist and Chris (Jim) Soetaert, all of Marquette; grandchildren, John, Catherine and Joseph Hanson, Stephanie Winquist, Sarah (Robbie) Baumgartner, Michael (Farah) Soetaert and Jennifer (Dave) Ehrlinger; great-grandchildren, Brianna Hanson, Hunter, Lucy and Lydia Baumgartner, Daphne, Quinn, Violet & Ellery Soetaert and Penelope Ehrlinger; brother-in-law, Robert (Marlene) Hanson of Marquette; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Helen Hanson, John B. Smith, Betty Palmer, Robert E. Smith and Ron Smith.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 12 Noon at St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Aaron Nowicki officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the Mass in the Bishop’s Room at the church. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
