Obituary for JOSEPH W. MENZE

Joseph W. Menze, 81, of Marquette, died Sunday morning, November 19, 2017 at U.P. Health System-Marquette.

Joe was born on February 12, 1936 in Marquette, a son of the late Franz and Amelia (Brunngraeber) Menze and was a lifelong Upper Peninsula resident. He was a 1954 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and also received an engineering degree. He then served eight years with the U.S. Army National Guard and Reserves.

Joe was a partner with the former Menze Construction Company for over 30 years. In his free time, he loved getting himself involved in projects to stay occupied, enjoyed making maple syrup at the Sugarbush in McFarland, bike riding and walking around the Superior Dome. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their various activities.

Joe served as a past president of the Marquette Builder’s Exchange, former member and president of the Marquette Exchange Club, and was an active member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey. Joe also belonged to St. Louis the King Council #64447 Knights of Columbus as well as Bishop Baraga the Snowshoe Priest Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Joe is survived by five children, Bridget (Steve) Lang of Ishpeming, Joseph Menze of Marquette, Jackie Arnett of Walnut Creek, CA; Margaret (Dean) Cameron and Beth (Steve) Bonanni, both of Marquette; five grandchildren, Nicole and Travis Cameron, Sierra Lang, Bryanna and Logan Bonanni; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents was his wife, Kathleen Menze in 2014; step-mother, Mildred Menze and siblings, Paul Menze, Mary Thomas, Ann Menze, Carl Menze and Herman Menze.


The Menze family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon in the church with the Rev. Glenn Theoret officiating. A luncheon will be served in Father Gauthier Hall immediately following the Mass. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe Menze, Dean Cameron, Steve Bonanni, Travis Cameron, and Steve Lang. Members of Bishop Baraga the Snowshoe Priest Assembly Knights of Columbus will provide an honor guard.
