Obituary for CATHERINE H. "KATIE" HAWKINS

Catherine H. “Katie” Hawkins, 96, of Marquette, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 19, 2017 at the Norlite Nursing Center with her daughter at her side. Katie was born on October 5, 1921 in Helena, MT to the late John and Catherine (Lubowitz) Johnson. She was a 1939 graduate of Edison High School in Minneapolis, MN. Katie married Jack Hawkins on April 16, 1945 in Aiken, SC. Together they moved to Marquette in 2001 from Arden Hills, Minnesota to be closer to their daughter, Peggy. Katie worked in the garment industry directly out of high school. She then worked at Honeywell, eventually returning to her seamstress work at “Over the Rainbow” Garment Outlet. She loved to sew and knit, do needlework and read. Katie is survived by her daughter, Margaret “Peggy” (Gerard) Kulbieda of Marquette; three grandchildren, Mark (Brenda) Kulbieda of Petoskey, MI, Brian (Tammy) Kulbieda and Katie (Peter) Thiel, all of Marquette; five great grandchildren, Faith and Jackson Kulbieda, Arlie and Maris Kulbieda and Madilyn Thiel; her brother, Don Johnson of Surprise, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, on July 4, 2003 and her siblings, Ben Johnson, Alice Johnson, Russ Johnson, Jeanette Bredemus, Kenneth Johnson and Howard Johnson. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Greg Heikkala officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately after the service in the funeral home. Burial will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens. Katie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren will act as her escorts. Katie’s family would like to acknowledge the wonderful nursing staff and caregivers at the Norlite Nursing Center for their kind and tender care of Katie during her two years there. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the St. Michael Altar Society, 401 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Katie’s memory.
