Obituary for BARBARA MAE BENSTROM

Barbara M. Benstrom, 84, of Gwinn, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living surrounded by her family and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. Barbara was born September 20, 1933 in Great Falls, Montana, a daughter of the late Frank W. and Lucille M. (Cole) Karhi. On December 9, 1950 she married Daniel L. Benstrom in Great Falls. The couple was married for 65 years until Dan’s death on October 21, 2016. Barbara was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and the NCO Wife’s Club. She enjoyed attending various NMU sporting events through the years with her husband and traveling to attend the Berlin Airlift Reunions. She is survived by four children, Kathleen (David) Williams of Hattiesburg, MS, Karen (Harold) Kammeyer of Ogden, UT, Karl (Karen) Benstrom of Marquette and Kevin Benstrom of Ishpeming; 10 grandchildren, Colonel Jason (Stacy) Williams, Karen (John) Bezou, Lisa Williams, Christopher (JoAnna) Lamb, Matthew Lamb, Nicholas (Amber) Lamb, Ashley Johnson, Ross Johnson, Rachael Laurin and Rebecca Perry; 11 great-grandchildren, Javen, Evan, Delilah, Alia, Alexa, Jesse, Grace, William, Ava, Nola and Maya; sister-in-law, Karen Karhi of Lewistown, MT; and nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, James Karhi. In accordance with Barbara’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held in the Gwinn Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society, UPAWS or Daughters of the Nile.
